Because passenger and freight trains are active in North Carolina, many busy streets and frequented byways cross paths with railroad tracks… and there’s little that upsets a tight schedule like having to wait at the crossing gates — right?

Wrong!

The gates are down, the bell is ringing an>d the lights are flashing to save your life! Yes, it takes a few minutes to wait for the train to pass by… but a few minutes won’t kill you. But going around the gates or trying to beat the train just might.

You must always obey the crossing gates, lights and bells — and NEVER try to go around the gates or beat the train. You will lose! Check out these other tips to respect the crossing:

Always expect a train at every highway-rail intersection. Freight trains do not travel on a predictable schedule and passenger train schedules frequently change.
Trains ALWAYS have the right-of-way over ambulances, fire engines, cars and the police.
Always stop your vehicle when crossing gates are down or lights are flashing. Never try to drive around the gate. Look both ways, listen and proceed with caution.
Never stop your car on railroad tracks. When approaching an intersection at railroad tracks, keep your car safely behind the white lines.
Never race a train to a crossing.
